Best Books for 1st Graders in 2026 [Expert Picks for Early Readers]

This Dr. Seuss boxed set is a timeless choice for first graders just starting to read. It includes five iconic titles like The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, which are famous for their rhythmic language and playful rhymes.

What I find really great about this set is how the books are perfect for either reading aloud or for kids to try on their own. The repetitive phrases and imaginative stories make it approachable and fun, which is crucial at this stage. Compared to some newer series, the Dr. Seuss books have that classic charm and proven track record that many parents trust.

If your child enjoys a bit of silliness and rhyme, this set is a fantastic way to nurture their reading skills without it feeling like a chore.

Junie B. Jones is a favorite series for many kids transitioning from simple picture books to chapter books. This boxed set of the first four books captures the humor and relatable school experiences of a spunky first grader.

From my experience, these stories keep kids hooked with Junie B.'s funny and sometimes mischievous personality. The chapters are short enough to not overwhelm new readers, and the writing style is conversational. Compared to the Dr. Seuss set, Junie B. Jones offers more narrative depth and character development, which helps kids who are ready for longer reads.

If your child enjoys stories about school life and real-world situations, this series is a solid pick.

Amelia Bedelia’s literal take on language makes this set a very entertaining choice for first graders who are ready to dive into full chapter books. The humor comes from Amelia’s silly misunderstandings, which also gently introduce kids to wordplay and idioms.

I’ve noticed that kids who enjoy these books often start to think more about language and context, which is a nice bonus beyond just reading practice. Compared with Junie B. Jones, Amelia Bedelia leans more into humor and wordplay rather than everyday school life, so it’s a fun alternative for kids who like a little silliness.

The stories feel lighthearted and accessible, making this set a good bridge to more complex books.

This massive set of 60 stapled readers is a treasure trove for anyone looking to cover a lot of ground in first grade reading skills. The books are designed by reading specialists, which gives them a solid foundation for teaching phonics and sight words.

I like how the books are organized into levels A through D, allowing kids to gradually build their skills. The black and white pages might seem plain, but they actually help kids focus on the text rather than getting distracted by colorful pictures. Compared to the story-driven boxed sets, this one is more of an educational toolkit, great if you want structured reading practice.

It’s perfect for parents or teachers aiming to boost reading strategies alongside fun stories.

This collection offers captivating short stories tailored for 1st graders, with the added bonus of read-along audio and comprehension questions. It’s a thoughtful approach to boost both reading and listening skills simultaneously.

I found the audio feature especially helpful for kids who benefit from hearing fluent reading while following along. The comprehension questions help check understanding without being too difficult. Compared to the previous sets, this one feels more interactive and modern, catering well to different learning styles.

If your child enjoys stories but also needs some extra support with comprehension, this book is a solid choice.

This workbook is a smart pick for bridging the gap between kindergarten and first grade. It’s packed with over 75 activities covering phonics, spelling, reading, language, measurement, and time.

What I appreciate most is how it balances learning with fun, using puzzles and exercises that don’t feel too much like homework. I’ve seen kids build confidence with this kind of workbook because it reinforces important skills in a low-pressure way. Unlike storybooks, this focuses on active skill-building, making it ideal for summer or extra practice.

It’s a great supplement if you want to keep your child’s brain engaged during breaks.

This workbook from Highlights for Children is designed to make learning first grade skills enjoyable. It combines puzzles, coloring, and simple exercises that cover reading and other subjects.

From my experience, this workbook stands out for its lively illustrations and variety of activities that keep kids interested. It’s less intensive than some skill-heavy workbooks but still effective for reinforcing basic concepts. Compared to The Summer Before First Grade Workbook, it feels more playful and less structured, which can be a good fit for kids who need a lighter touch.

If you want a workbook that feels more like play, this one’s worth considering.
